Bronze in Motion

Dr. P. Gnana is a distinguished painter, sculptor, and conceptual installation artist, particularly prominent in the Singapore art scene. In Indian art history, the divine figure was never an idolatrous image: it carried prana, that is, breath, life, and rhythm. The beauty of Nataraja’s sway and the gracefulness of Krishna leaning with the cow can be considered evocative of an energy in eternal dance rather than of stillness.

Dr Gnana’s sculptures share much of the same kind of spirit. His form tends to be more modern; often, they may even be abstracted or elongated, and rhythm is sculpted into the metal itself. His work with sculptures is emblematic of an idea that a curve or a gesture can hold life-force.

Gnana is known for his experimentation and diverse use of materials, blending conventional media with industrial and recycled objects. He employs the meticulous lost wax technique which validates his dedication to creating objects of lasting artistic and material integrity. By requiring the destruction of the mold for every piece, the process ensures that his bronzes are not mass-produced merchandise, but rather sculptures that carry the DNA of an ancient, handcrafted tradition. This commitment to the craft is what transforms the final product into a genuinely limited edition, where each numbered sculpture is, in fact, an irreplaceable, unique work of art.
