Eternal Embrace

In the realm of Indian contemporary art, where the figure often serves as a means for reinterpretation, Dr Gnana’s mother-and-child sculptures reflect themes of intimacy, continuity, and cosmic nurture. Exhibited in international collections and in an art gallery in India, these works are not portraits of individual families but archetypes. They evoke timeless expressions of care, protection, and the deep bond between mother and child. The figure appears calm, with serene faces and closed eyes that seem to look inward. The mother embraces her child, their bodies leaning into one another with quiet confidence. The focus is on intimacy and protection, expressed through form instead of detail.

Natural flow is one of the defining qualities of these sculptures. The mother’s limbs curve gently to meet the child’s posture, while the child’s small body nestles into the mother’s lap. The two figures merge into a single rhythm, creating a circular flow that symbolises nurture, growth, and return. This sense of continuity in modern Indian sculpture echoes classical rhythms, where form is dynamic, full of movement. The circular embrace becomes more than just a posture; it turns into a metaphor for the inseparability of care and the eternal cycle of life.
